What is Driver CPC?

According to the EU Directive 2003/59, it is essential for drivers driving Large Goods Vehicle or Passenger Carrying Vehicle to get Driver CPC training. The module has been designed to help the drivers gain knowledge and expertise to drive LGV or PCV safely. Even though the driver is responsible for getting his/her Driver CPC license after undergoing proper training, it is also the responsibility of the employer to keep records of its employees’ training and to remain compliant to the rules.

What Does Driver CPC Training Involve?

Any person looking to receive their Driver CPC license needs to pass an initial qualification test which consists of the following parts –

  • Theory Test
  • Driver CPC Case Studies Test
  • Driving Ability Test
  • Driver CPC Practical Test

Once the person passes the above tests, they receive a qualification card that they need to carry when driving. The qualification card is valid for a period of five years from the date of issue. The person will also be required to complete 35 hours of periodic training by registered providers such as Driver CPC course to receive their Driver CPC license. The person will need to undergo the said training every five years to keep their license up to date. The training is provided to ensure a high standard of safety on the roads.

Who Needs Driver CPC?

All professional drivers of HGV or PCV need to get Driver CPC license after proper training. There are however some exemptions to the rule such as those driving non-commercial vehicles for personal use, those driving to and from vehicle testing centers for appointments, carrying equipment for your job where driving vehicle is not actual part of the job, and others.
